Google Workspace to Microsoft 365: a full-stack migration

The situation

An education and professional services organization was operating on Google Workspace and had outgrown it. Leadership wanted Microsoft 365 — specifically for the security tooling, the desktop Office apps people actually preferred, and the deeper integration with the Windows endpoints they were standardizing on. What they didn’t want was a six-month migration that broke email for a week somewhere in the middle.

What I did

I led the migration end-to-end. That meant inventorying everything first — every identity, every shared mailbox, every Drive folder that mattered, every integration. We migrated identities to Entra ID with proper group structures from day one, not the flat mess that usually accumulates after the fact. Mail and calendar moved over with cutover scheduled for off-hours. File migration to OneDrive and SharePoint was done in waves, organized so people could actually find their content afterward. Endpoints were reconfigured — Outlook, Teams, OneDrive sync, MFA enrollment — with end-user training scheduled before each wave so nobody was caught off-guard.

The outcome

Zero data loss. No extended downtime. The organization came out the other side on a properly architected M365 tenant with documented identity, group, and licensing structures. From there I went on to triple their device enrollment count, lift their Secure Score from 45% to 85%, and over the following months run incident response on more than ten security investigations with zero accounts compromised across all of them — all of which built on the foundation laid in this migration.
